Apparently, Disney finally decided to try their luck with "Tron" one more time. The third "Tron" titled "Tron: Ares", after years of groping in the dark is still moving from the deadlock. The film moves forward with a new director – Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil). Jared Leto will continue to interpret one of the main roles and he is also one of the producers of the project. Leto is in this story since 2017 when the director was Garth Davis (Lion), who after some time left the project. Jesse Wigutow remained the film's screenwriter, and Justin Springer, Jeffrey Silver and Emma Ludbrook are producing. "Tron: Ares" is reportedly a sequel to "Tron: Legacy", not a reboot of the franchise. The film is currently assembling a crew with plans to begin production in August 2023.
Disney started working on the third "Tron" even before "Tron: Legacy" hit theaters. The writers were initially hired in April 2010, eight months before the franchise was relaunched. "Tron 3" went through several hands of writers. At one point, the plan was to return Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde under the direction of Kosinski. However, Disney then canceled "Tron: Ascension" in May 2015, shortly before filming began.
In the original 1982 film, Jeff Bridges stars as video game developer Kevin Flynn, who finds himself inside his own creation and teams up with Tron, a security program played by Bruce Boxleitner. The film was not particularly successful at the box office, earning 33 million dollars (about 100 million dollars today), but it was highly praised for its revolutionary visual effects and managed to secure cult status and numerous fans over the years. Therefore, a sequel followed in 2010 - "Tron: Legacy" directed by Joseph Kosinski, in which we had the opportunity to see Jeff Bridges again. But even the sequel didn't do well at the box office, earning 400 million dollars.
