Why is vitamin C so popular in cosmetics?
What are the benefits of including vitamin C in skincare and what to look out for
Most of us have at least one skin ‘problem’ that we would like to fix, whether it’s hyperpigmentation, uneven complexion, tired skin, tiny wrinkles, or acne scars, and they all have the same solution: vitamin C.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that neutralizes the damage caused by free radicals and protects against the negative effects of the environment. If we want to lighten and even out the complexion, whiten blemishes and stimulate collagen production, and reduce fine lines and firm up the skin, vitamin C is a great ally.
How to include it in skincare? It is recommended that it be introduced into the care routine gradually. It is possible to start with preparations that have a vitamin C content of 10%, and depending on how the skin tolerates it, increase the percentage and frequency of use. Initially, it is not necessary to use it every day. Since these are the active ingredients, skin irritations are possible, so it is recommended to test the skin reactions first.
The most stable form of vitamin C in skincare is L-ascorbic acid, intended for more oily and normal skin, and can also occur in other forms, such as magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or sodium ascorbyl phosphate.
It often comes in combination with vitamins B or E, hyaluronic acid, or ferulic acid which stabilizes vitamins C and E. It should not be used with benzoyl peroxide because it can oxidize so it does not work, but also with other acids or retinol due to possible irritations.
Serums are considered the most effective, but for sensitive skin, vitamin C can be mixed with moisturizer or use a moisturizer with vitamin C. Apply to cleansed skin, and if used in daycare, the skin should be protected with SPF factor, at least 30, because it is sensitive to light.
For this reason, vitamin C products come in opaque packaging and should be stored in a cool and dark place. If it darkens or changes the smell, it means that it has oxidized and is no longer effective.
