20 facts about the "Third Rock From The Sun" series

The world was "conquered" in the mid-1990s by the 5-year-long series "3rd Rock from the Sun," which aired from 1996 to 2001. The plot revolves around four aliens that arrive on Earth, create human bodies, and take on the identities of Dick (John Lithgow), Sally (Christine Johnston), Harry (French Stewart), and Tommy (Joseph Gordon Levitt), establishing the Solomon family.

Their mission is to perform experiments and study life on Earth. In Rutherford, Ohio, the imaginary town where they landed, the Solomons will find an apartment with the landlord Mrs. Dubcek. Dick secures a position as a physics professor. There he meets Mary Albright (Jane Curtin), a colleague with whom he shares an office.

Their friendship evolves into a romantic partnership over time. Sally meets Don, a police officer (Wayne Knight). Vicki (Jan Hooks), Mrs. Dubcek's daughter, captures Harry's heart. Tommy develops feelings for a girl named August (Shay Astar).

1. Ian Lithgow, the son of John Lithgow (Dick Solomon), played Dr. Dick Solomon's pupil Leon throughout the series.

2. French Stewart, rather by accident, came up with Harry's signature squint. He returned home from his first audition for the show, feeling that everything went well. He rewarded himself with a bong hit and a soak in the tub. Later that day, his manager calls to tell him that the casting director wants to see him again.

French informs the manager that he is high, and she gives him one hour to get back to normal. When he returns, the casting director senses a difference in his performance and likes it. As a result, the Harry character squinted throughout the series.

3. In the last season, Joseph Gordon-Levitt only featured in slightly more than half of the episodes (including the series finale) in order to focus on his studies at Columbia University. Details said that the former child star was "scared and depressed" for a time, afraid he would never be able to find acting employment again.

4. Jane Curtin initially agreed to appear in only seven episodes of the first season. She decided to stay on the show to the very end after finishing recording her sixth episode.

5. Phil Hartman was tragically slain eight days after the third season finale aired. When the episode was re-aired a week before the next season premiere, Hartman's sequences were re-shot with a different actor playing a different role so that the resolution of the problem involving Hartman's character did not appear poorly recreated or possibly perceived as disrespectful.

6. One of the reasons John Lithgow agreed to make this television series was to give him a work schedule that would allow him to spend time with his family.

7. Kristen Johnston was depressed throughout the series. She stated she didn't tell people what she was going through, but even with the show's success, it was difficult for her to be joyful. According to Johnston, "When you're being recognized, you can't be sad. So there was a great dispute, and no psychiatrist could grasp it."

8. Physicist Brian Greene created portions of the dialogue for Dr. Dick Solomon (John Lithgow), a college physics professor.

9. There are 109 episodes with the title "Dick" out of 139.

10. There are three washers and dryers in the Solomons' home. One was spotted from the roof in the attic, one on the ground floor by the garage's rear door, and one in the basement where Dick was confined at the end of the first season.

11. Only John Lithgow, Kristen Johnston, and French Stewart have appeared in all 139 episodes of the series.

12. Dick Solomon's character was placed #24 in TV Guide's list of the "25 Greatest Science Fiction Legends" (August 1, 2004 issue).

13. Don's (Wayne Knight) coworkers Between episodes, Rick and Rusty were rarely performed by the same actors.

14. There was frequently a picture of the Earth spinning as seen from orbit during scene breaks. The image reappears just before the credits, only to reverse.

15. "Johnny Foam's," the cafeteria frequented by the principal characters, was named after costume supervisor Johnny Foam.

16. The Solomons entered their loft apartment from the living room door in the first episode. This door later leads to Dick's bedroom, with the loft entry replaced by a pair of steps.

17. The series' title is based on a song by country musician Joe Diffie of the same name.

18. Due to falling ratings in the last season, the series was discontinued on April 8, 2001.

19. The huge giant head was the galaxy's and subsequently the entire universe's leader.

20. Many sets were reused, which explains the comparable patterns in certain spots. For example, Dr. Mary Albright's (Jane Curtin) classroom was also utilized for Harry's (French Stewart) night school.
