Is it ok to eat fruit after a meal?

Ending your meal with a piece of fruit may not be as good an idea as you think. Many nutritionists agree that eating fruit as a dessert would only disrupt the often complex process of digestion, causing various feelings of discomfort. The reason is simple and well known - most fruits are very rich in insoluble fiber.

If that's not a bad thing in itself, the problem is that these fibers circulate through the body very easily. Consumed at the end of a meal, fruit, therefore, travels to the large intestine (the last part of the gastrointestinal tract) faster than it should, long before other foods in the meal can be absorbed. As a result, it waits its turn in the digestive tract. Enough to have time to ferment, causing various indigestion, such as flatulence.

Is fruit for dessert a bad idea?

Ideally, it would be desirable to consume fruit between one and several hours after the end of the last meal, when the process of digesting the meal would be allowed to begin, undisturbed. If we assume that the digestion phase takes place during 3 to 4 hours, only after that time can we consume fruit without problems.

However, it is not a scientifically proven golden rule, as nutritionist Oreli Biron Pumar said: "The stomach is a mixer in which everything is mixed. Eating fruit at the end of a meal will not have a blocking effect on digestion. And let me add that it's more about psychological manipulations. In some cases, however, it makes more sense to eat the fruit in isolation, especially to reduce the desire to snack after a meal or in the case of people suffering from eating disorders who prefer to divide their meals because they can't eat a lot at once."
