Was Marilyn better than Kim?
Kim Kardashian wore the legendary Marilyn Monroe dress at this year’s Met Gala which sparked an avalanche of criticism, but how much are these two icons really - different?
After this year's Met Gala, most of the writing was about the dress that Kim Kardashian wore on the most famous red carpet.
Even the sparrows on the branch know she wore the iconic, nearly $ 5 million dress that Marilyn Monroe wore when she sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to President John F. Kennedy in 1962. She had to lose 7 pounds for her.
By the time she wore it, the dress was in a well-controlled vault, and the Kardashian was the first to use it after the legendary actress. However, she wore the original creation for only a few minutes while she walked the red carpet. After him, she changed into her copy. And while everyone these days has been writing about whether she deserved to wear it at all, Kim revealed on her Instagram that it wasn’t the only legendary Monroe dress she wore that night. Namely, she later changed into another well-known creation. It is an emerald dress by Norman Norell that Marilyn wore in 1962 at the Golden Globes when she also received the award.
American historians have not hidden their anger at the fact that it was Kim who wore the legendary dress, but the question is would they have a problem if it was done by any other woman on the planet?
‘While I understand the wish of wanting someone to wear a cult dress, I also think that it’s not exactly a good decision. The dress is made for Marilyn Monroe and is not a garment that can be redesigned ', said collector Scott Fortner, one of the greatest private collectors of personal belongings of Marilyn Monroe who knows that the late actress wanted a dress that would be unique and only hers. Precisely because of this, historians claim that Kim Kardashian did not deserve to wear that dress.
‘If I were asked, I would not allow such a thing mostly because the dress has great significance in American history, it is a national treasure. But to be clear, this has nothing to do with Kim Kardashian ', Foster pointed out at the end.
But Kim wore it. But when you think about it, it was once Marilyn, an icon who became popular because of her beauty, unhappy life and sexuality. To be brutally honest, Marilyn Monroe was Kim in the 50s and early 60s, she just didn’t have a home video.
She had unhappy marriages just like Kim had. Also, both were ridiculed by Hollywood. Not so long ago, ‘Met Gale boss’, the infamous Anna Wintour, openly didn’t want Kim at the fashion event of the year, nor did her sisters because she considered them ‘hard-working reality stars’. So it was only this year that all sisters Kardashian and Jenner set foot at the Met Gala.
On the other hand, Marilyn had a lot of people behind her who ridiculed her appearance and talent and claimed that she was known only for her unhappy life and love affairs, as well as the affair with the Kennedy brothers, which many blame for her untimely death. Of course, Kim also thought that she was untalented, but when you haven't been removed from the Hollywood throne for more than two decades and everyone is still interested in what you do, with whom and when then that word doesn't go with such a person.
Last but not least, what connects the two is the fact that the majority of the public enjoys or has enjoyed their public misfortune. Only Kim had a much happier childhood with a mother who created her with smart business moves, while Marilyn was left very early without a mother who ended up in a psychiatric facility, causing her to change foster families at the speed of light, marking her in the worst possible way.
Marilyn ended up alone, as the mistress of powerful men, which she found hard to bear, hoping to finally find happiness. Still, it marked an important part of history and she will not be forgotten.
