Food cravings can reveal what your body needs

Have you ever had a craving for certain foods? Believe it or not, this does not happen by accident. The food your body asks for reveals something about health. Australian nutritionists point out that it is important to pay attention to your appetite and the food you crave because it can reveal certain deficiencies in the body.

Healthy metabolism
Lee Holmes, the nutritionist, points out that longing for certain foods is often an indicator of a lack of certain minerals in the body, which over time can lead to health problems, and when it comes to nutrition, you often struggle with increased appetite and desire for food.

If you've been eating a lot of chocolate, nuts, or peas lately, it could mean that your body lacks magnesium, which can be found in pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, peanuts, soy milk, and spinach. Lee thinks it's normal to add that chocolate or nut to your meal at such times to curb cravings.

He adds that a lack of zinc, chromium, iron, calcium, and magnesium can also lead to cravings for sweet foods. If your mouth is watering at the mention of lollipops, sweetened beverages, and foods full of sugar, you may be lacking chromium, tryptophan, and phosphorus, all of which, according to experts, are needed for energy, cell renewal, and a healthy metabolism.

Electrolyte imbalance
If you're craving salty snacks, it could be a sign of an electrolyte imbalance, which can occur after exercise and dehydration. Lee adds that zinc and iron deficiencies can also cause salty cravings. It may be a little strange to crave carbonated water, but it can also happen, which means that there is a lack of calcium in the body. Instead of giving in to cravings, make up for the deficiency by drinking milk or eating plums, broccoli, and kale at every meal. If you're low on iron, you're likely to have strong red meat cravings, and if you're low on protein in your diet, that could also be responsible for food cravings.

What does it show you?
Chocolate cravings: Your body needs magnesium, and you can get it through nuts, green leafy vegetables, and fruits.
Craving sugary drinks and foods: Your body needs chromium, tryptophan, and phosphorus, and you can find them in green vegetables, chicken, cheese, grapes, sweet potatoes, eggs, and grains.
A desire for bread and pasta: Your body needs protein and nitrogen, and you should eat red meat, peas, chia seeds, and fatty fish.
A desire for fatty foods: Your body needs calcium, and you can find it in vegetables, lentils, milk, and cheese.
A desire for salty food: The body lacks chloride and silicon, and you can find it in seeds, fatty fish, and goat's milk.
